The Old Freo Bridge Project

Our idea is to transform it into a New York style High Line Park over the Swan River. Where it can be used by pedestrians, cyclists, picnickers, students, tourists, with art installations, and food trucks and live music on the weekends.

There are calls for the old Fremantle Traffic Bridge to be retained and transformed into a "Perth Highline", becoming a pedestrian and cycle-only bridge and tourist attraction.

New York's famous Highline is an elevated park constructed on the site of a former rail line, while Paris has a similar elevated parkland walkway, built on the site of a 19th- century viaduct.

Former WA Premier Carmen Lawrence told ABC Perth's Mornings show, the old bridge is a "heritage icon" and should be saved as a community resource.

"It's a rare example of a timber bridge and once you take the traffic off it, the amount of work required to maintain it would diminish," she said.

"We're always demolishing our heritage, it's time to stop doing it."
